Nas to Executive Produce Series on First Black Chess Grandmaster Maurice Ashley
Hip-hop legend Nas is stepping into the world of television with a powerful new project that brings the story of Maurice Ashley, the first Black International Chess Grandmaster, to life. In collaboration with Power executive producer Mark Canton, Nas will help develop an eight-episode scripted series chronicling Ashley’s inspiring journey. From growing up in Brooklyn to achieving one of the highest honors in the chess world, Ashley's life story is one of perseverance, brilliance, and breaking barriers.
The series will delve into Ashley’s rise through the ranks in a predominantly white, elite sport, showcasing not only his triumphs on the chessboard but also the obstacles he faced along the way. A key part of Ashley’s legacy includes founding the Harlem Chess Center, where he has mentored countless young players, using the game as a tool for empowerment and education. His groundbreaking accomplishments culminated in his induction into the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame, solidifying his place in history.
For Nas this project is more than entertainment; it is a chance to spotlight a Black pioneer whose story often goes untold. By teaming up with Canton, known for his hit-making prowess, Nas aims to craft a compelling narrative that resonates with viewers from all walks of life. Ashley hopes the series will serve as a beacon of inspiration, encouraging audiences to challenge the status quo and pursue greatness, no matter where they start.
